Drawing an Animal Nose using Photoshop 3/D

In Photoshop Window tab choose 3D create file from Mesh.  This time I want a cone to have a basic dog nose shape.

When asked do not switch to 3D workspace.

An nose is basically a cone. To look correct, the light must be directly from the front.   Move the light around to be seen from the front.  The light view is the smaller window.  The light is directly in front of the sphere.

Go to layer an flatten your cone when it looks correct.  If it does not flatten with direct front light try again.

First select and cut the shadow to remove it.  Unless your animal has frosty's nose you  must use puppet warp to look correct.   Under edit, puppet warp select the cone.

I have reshaped it to remove the point and  to have a slight tip.

I then choose a paint brush  and brown grayish color to paint with a smooth airbrush.
I fill in the white on the nose to all but a small amount to be similar to the puppy nose that I am following.

On a new layer and with a darker black and my air brush, I then fill in the nose so that it looses it's cone shape

There is a dark line at the top of the nose shape so with my airbrush I paint that as well.

Here I am examining what I need to add. The nostrils will come next.

I create the nostril with my shape tool.

I change the contrast of it so that it can show up.

I duplicate the shape and edit transform to flip it horizontally.

Next I change the color balance to look more like the pup's nose in the photo.

Once again I adjust the nose, using the burn and dodge tools to lighten and darken areas.

I duplicate the paint layer, and dissolve the paint to add specks, adjusting transparency as needed.

Duplicate that layer and adjust it with brightness and contrast to create white texture.

Next I select the textures and blurred the areas to be not so heavy handed.

On the non textured area I adjust the color in adjust curves.
I copy that layer and played with adjustment as well to make it look more real.

Repeat this step as needed.

I adjust the shape of the nostrils and ad the crease down the middle.

I adjust the color one last time, and am happy with the similarity to the photo.

I save it as a Photo shop document.  Then I flatten the nose and save it as a large jpg.  The nose is then ready for use in a front on dog drawing.

Abstracted Distorted Example.

Digital Abstraction Tutorial Through Distortion Techniques

Abstraction Through Distortion

Remember I said that art from Africa (although Picasso denied this) also influenced the development of abstraction. The next father of abstraction developed cubism which also was a great style of change for the last 100 years. Many artists still create works in this style today. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (The Young Ladies of Avignon) is a large scale painting presenting French ladies of the night produced by Pablo Picasso in 1907. Five nude sex workers from a Barcelona brothel are the subject of this work.

Notice the faces that look like masks. This was indeed shocking to the viewers at this time. It also led Picasso and numerous others to distort reality through cubism, which distorted reality by viewing it from many sides at the same time.

Picasso - Head of a Sleeping Woman (Study for Nude with Drapery), 1907. Oil on canvas, 61.4 × 47.6 cm, The Museum of Modern Art, New York / Left: Pablo Picasso - Femme nue, oil on canvas, 1907. Oil on canvas, 92 x 43 cm, Museo delle Culture, Milano

Adobe has some interesting distortion filters to work with for this style.

Step 1

I found a simple photograph that I will attempt to play with the same colors and distortion as the Femme Nude.

My Photograph of ODIE

The first step was to duplicate this layer and then erase the background leaving only the head.  The eraser tool works just like a paintbrush.

With the layer of the head I use filter ink outline, and distort pinch lining up the head to distort it in a way that Changes the head Size in a way that seems mask like.

Next I want to make the mask more elongated, so the next step is to use edit, transform distort.

After trying distort, the elongation that I liked the best was perspective.

Next I worked on the background layer without the head. I used filter-gallery smudgestick.

To simulate the yellow tones I used image adjust color balance and chose to up yellow on medium and

shadows.

Finally, I made bold brush marks and played with color filters.

Assignment:2 - Make 2 or more examples of photos with distortion filters and or use edit free transform distort. Budget time 2-4 hours.

Here are two distortion and abstraction videos.
