Abstraction and Distortion Tutorial Fauvism

Digital Abstraction / Pattern and Texture with Photoshop

Type 1 Wild Beast Abstraction

When the Western art world discovered art from Asia and Africa in the 1800’s after the invention of the camera, art changed to new directions of abstraction. Two big changes were the flattening of value which caused simplification, and a new use of brighter colors. These bright unrealistic colors led to a style called Fauvism, or the Wild Beasts a period of time of around ten years (1897 to 1908). Henri Matisse, the father of fauvism painted this landscape painting. The color in this piece is called arbitrary color. Digital art uses color in this manner all the time. This is seen in green cats and blue dogs for example.

In Adobe photoshop we can abstract reality in the same way with filters that simplify and through color choices.

I chose this photograph from shutterstock because of the composition and the already wild colors.

1.       Simplification is achieved through filters, it this case Filter Gallery Cutout. This is just one example of simplifying filters.

2.       Next, work with arbitrary color to abstract as Fauvism.

The second step then was to use Image Adjust and Hue and Saturation

3.       The third thing that Matisse’s painting has is texture. The real image was painted in oil paint and the actual surface has brush marks that are noticeable. I can apply simulated texture through another filter.

1st Abstract Assignment Simplified Realism with Fauvistic Color and Simulated Texture.

Create 5 of your photographs (yes you may use images from the web but you will not be able to call it you own in most circumstances. Your own photo would be best) with four to five examples of simplified fauvistic color and simulated texture. Upload 7 great images to discuss) Time budget- about one hour
